Understanding Color Temperature & How to Buy the Right Light Bulbs

Do you often head to the store to grab a replacement bulb for your light fixture and wonder what exactly all the labeling on the package means?  There is a lot of technical information  on the box to help you select the best bulb. But what does it all mean? One of your main considerations is going to be the Kelvin temperature of the bulb.

Larson Electrics best describes Kelvin as:

“In the lighting industry, Kelvin (K) refers to the light source’s coolness or warmth. The Kelvin rating on a light bulb or light fixture indicates the shade of white that is given off by the light source. Think of how the sun changes color as it moves through the sky. In the morning and evening the sun is more orange or pink, while in the middle of the day it gives off white or light blue color. These qualities are also in light bulbs, which are measured in Kelvins.”

Kelvin temperatures are rated on a scale ranging from 10000 K to 1000 K.

Warm colors have lower Kelvin temperatures, typically ranging from 2700K to 3000K, while cool colors have higher Kelvin temperatures, ranging from 4000K to 6500K.

When it comes to selecting light bulbs, it is essential to consider the purpose of the space and the mood you want to create.

For example, in a bedroom or living room, warm light with a lower Kelvin temperature can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere, while cooler light can make a space feel more energizing and bright.

5000 K is most commonly used in commercial applications such as gyms, industrial or manufacturing facilities and parking garages. Cooler light can help increase productivity and reduce eye strain, while warmer light can create a relaxing environment, making it challenging to focus.

3000 K is what I would most commonly select for a residential application. Even better is choosing 3 way light bulb fixtures that allow us to adjust the kelvin temperature at the flick of a switch. This is what I most commonly choose for my clients’ homes so they can adjust the light temperature to fit their desires.

Even though picking out the right bulb is a small task at hand, it has a great effect on how we live and experience our homes.  Want to learn more? Here is a great Youtube video all about the effect lighting has on our designed spaces and well being.
